'Together in Song' marked the first time we attempted a romantic film during our degree. It follows two queer men as they form a connection without ever meeting directly - which we did in order to subvert 'the male gaze'. Rather than having a connection built upon perverse voyeurism, we chose to eliminate the act of looking altogether to show that a romance could be built without relying on appearance. Another challenge we set ourselves was to create a film without using any spoken dialogue, where characters communicate only over text. By collaborating with Shayn Curtis, who is our frequent music composer, we were able to use the instruments each character plays as a way of reflecting them becoming intertwined through music and love.
