Xander's Story

PROJECT ROLE: Editor / Narrator / Wrestler (Xander Palmer)

When I was tasked with converting my character from a heel (villain) to a babyface (hero), I knew it would be one of the most challenging stories I would have to tell. Having played a villainous role for nearly three years, I had gotten very used to the idea that my wrestling character would remain a 'bad guy' for far longer, but as time went on, my comedic character began getting genuinely popular among the Aspire Wrestling fans - and the decision was made for me to become good again. In the end, we decided to take the emotional route, telling an earnest story of my whole life thus far to set a new course for the future. To sell the absence of my character and build suspence for my eventual return, I first made a teaser for the forthcoming videos:

The first full-length video I made focused on my past, telling the story of my life and career up to that point. I created an honest examination of my mental health - taking my real struggles with anxiety and depression and combining it with the fictional persona of the Xander Palmer character. This video was very cathartic to make, as a lot of the issues discussed still feel pertinent to me now.

The second video I made for this story was shown the next month, taking a look at my present and who my character felt he was supposed to be. While all the videos in this saga utilised home video footage from my childhood, this video also briefly uses footage of my grandparents, as the Xander Palmer charater calls into question whether his recent losing ways would honour their legacy or not. I wanted to end the saga on a positive note to drive excitement for the next stages of the story, bringing everything back to the present day and resolving the pain explored in the previous video.
